OM Golf Day - 12:00 Friday 19 June 2009 at the Rolls of Monmouth
Thank you very much everyone who has been in touch about the golf. I don’t have an exact number, but we have well over thirty who have said they wish to play on 19th June and a number of others who cannot make the date, but have expressed interest generally in some OM Golf.

Our field for 19th June looks like spanning an age range of almost 60 years, with Henry, the current head boy, threatening to bring at least a four ball from those who will have finished A levels only days before. I won’t mention by name any who were at school during the war (or indeed, which war) and still have handicaps considerably lower than mine, but will be very pleased to see them.

Most imaginative excuse for not being able to make the 19th “I’m having lunch at Highgrove”. Is that a good excuse?

The award for longest journey is probably sewn up by Rich McCrone (1971-78), travelling from Perth – not the one in Scotland. He’s probably got a few other things to do.

Grafton Morrish Tournament 2009
This is amateur scratch foursomes knock-out competition for three pairs of former pupils of the school.

The qualifying round for this tournament between all Public School Old Boys Clubs, took place at Olton Golf Club on Saturday 9th May 2009.The team of Ben Wesgate, James (“big Moggs”) Morgan, Duncan Farron, Rob Simpson, James Stock and Tom Light qualified on Saturday 9th May 2009 in the unseasonal Easterly gales(!). Congratulations to all of them.

Particular thanks to James Stock for stepping into the breach at the last moment.

In their own mystical words: -
“ we did feel we left a few points out there in the qualifier and were disappointed not to have walked it … Ben lays the blame in a dodgey course planner - I blame his putting stroke”
“ There was an issue with the course planner, stupid thing didn't give distances from the neighboring fairways, schoolboy oversight if you ask me.”
“ That’s enough ribbing of Mrs Westgate's putting, I'm the poor … who'll be fielding the 4 foot returns next time! Sort out some clubhead speed then we'll talk about putting!!!”
“ Do we know what the rules of this competition are? As I recall last time we qualified (September 1935 I think!!)”

The finals take place over the weekend of 24-27th September in North West Norfolk (Brancaster and Hunstanton).

Anyone interested in a supporter’s golfing tour to that part of the world over that weekend (to play some golf on neighbouring courses and make sure the team get to bed early and don’t drink too much) please get in touch.

The team is now invited to take part in the knock-out 'Finals' on 25-27th September (Friday to Sunday) with a practice day on Thursday 24th held at the Hunstanton G.C. in Hunstanton and the Royal West Norfolk G.C. in Brancaster.
Most Clubs field a team of six single figure handicap players for this scratch competition. Anyone with a single figure handicap interested in taking part in future should contact Keith Madsen (kj.madsen@monmouthschool.org or 01633 441485).

Edward Harris Cup - usually on the first Friday in October.
A competition between Old Boys of Welsh (loosely speaking) Public Schools in a four-ball better ball team format off 3/4 handicap. This is a more social competition in which mere humans can feel at home. Handicaps have ranged from +1 to 24 in the same team, and the age range has gone from 18 to 70ish.
The competition is organized each year by one of the participating schools, so the venue changes depending on who is the organiser. The last two years have been organised by the N Wales contingent and were played at Conwy and Royal St. David’s at Harlech.
This year, it is our turn to host.
David Peace is our current team captain and will be pleased to hear from anyone interested in playing, who has a handicap (preferably around +1, but anything below 24 will do) (davidpeace@btinternet.com or 01600 714151).
Up to date results and information of the above events will be published on the Website and in the Newsletter to be posted in February each year.
