2011 SEASON Report

2011 has been another immensely progressive year for the Old Monmothians Cricket Club. This is exemplified through the following statistics; in 2010, twenty-nine Old Boys represented the club across five fixtures whereas this year, thirty-eight made appearances over fifteen fixtures.

Over the past couple of years, the fixture schedule through June and July has consisted of more traditional fixtures taking the format of a declaration game or the more modern fifty overs a-side. While in August and early September the club compete in much shorter versions of the game in a competition structure. 2011 was on the whole, a very successful season culminating in ten victories including two tournament wins, two abandoned games and only three losses.

However the Club’s most significant game of the season resulted in a loss at the Quarter Final stage of the newly formed Cricketer Trophy. This competition was formed only six months ago comprising of eight private schools (Denstone, Hurstpierpoint, Kings Canterbury, Lancing, Monmouth, St George, Warwick & Westminster), which acts as a sub-competition to the prestigious thirty-two team Cricketer Cup competition. Those teams that perform consistently well in the Cricketer Trophy competition will be in pole position to gain acceptance to the Cricketer Cup competition when a position becomes vacant. Therefore, it was disappointing to lose out to Denstone by six wickets. The Old Boys were put in to bat in rather difficult conditions and only managed to scrape to 176 all out with 3.2 overs to spare despite a very gritty 49 from Tom Bevan. Denstone equipped with a very capable ex-professional coasted home with 8 overs to spare. Nonetheless, the season remained a success as victory was achieved in two thirds of all fixtures.

To start the season, there was a low scoring thriller against the Gloucestershire Gipsies. Jon Denning was the star of the show taking 3 for 12 off 9.2 overs restricting the Gipsies to 73 all out chasing just 97. In the next game, it was the turn of Dan Head and Dougie Spencer to show their ability as they amassed a fantastic 150 run opening stand versus the South Wales Hunt which insured a comfortable 5 wicket victory for the Old Boys chasing 242. It was the turn of The Mowers next which proved to be a very enjoyable game for all involved as it proved to be a good excuse for a social afterwards! The day after, a rather weary bunch of Old Boys faced the School’s 1st XI but unfortunately, the weather prevailed with the game in the balance. For the first time the Old Boys faced rivals, the Old Cliftonians in a friendly and it proved to be a nail biter. Unfortunately, Clifton prevailed in the last over even though Matt Robinson (81) and Tom Lee (60) had appeared to steer the Club into a match winning position.

At the mid point of the season, the format reverted to the shorter version. The Old Boys won their first trophy at the Monmouth CC T12 Competition defeating both Goodrich CC and Monmouth CC comprehensively. The following weekend was the Wye Valley Tri-Series, which saw the Club retain the trophy defeating Monmouth CC once again as well as Wormelow CC. Over the two weekends, there were impressive displays from Oli James, Chris Lawlor and Alec Backhouse but Seb Warwick stole the show with some blistering and bullish batting and even some cunning bowling! With two tournament victories already achieved, the Old Boys went in to the St Fagans Sixes with great confidence however this was shattered when they were greeted by defeat in their first group game. Qualification was always going to be difficult from this point despite two big victories in the next two group games and alas, the Old Boys were knocked out at the group stage.
