OM DAY 2011
Thank you to all those OMs
who helped celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Old Monmothian Club on
Saturday 11th June 2011!
The President's Speech:
"WELCOME to everyone on this, the 125th Anniversary of the
'Old Monmothian Club', celebrating this special occasion in this
marvellous venue - the Sports Pavilion, endowed so generously by
David Hitchcock, Old Monmothian, who will be chief guest at the
School Speech Day on Saturday 9th July 2011.
There are 67 in attendance to enjoy
the delicious food always splendidly prepared by Neil and Ginny
Muir and their staff.
Apologies:
i) Donald Spencer (84 in August next) telephoned this week to
say that he was recovering from bowel cancer.
ii) Tony Roberts - an architect of the School Scholarship Fund,
recovering from intensive course of treatment and currently
staying with Gerald Wright, Head Boy 1954-55.
iii) Brian Margrett - Chairman of the Review Sub-Committee and
Shooting star who does not enjoy the best of health
iv) Richard Booth, our Vice President
Wonderful that as we as an OM body welcome our guests, we do so
in the presence of all four of our patrons: Sir Frank Davies (OM
43-48), Bob Blake (OM38-42), Henry Toulouse (OM42-45) and Ivor
Hodgson (OM44-51) who have each contributed so greatly to the
health and vitality of our OM Club. On behalf of our OM Club may
I then extend the warmest of welcomes to our guests:
i) Dr Steven Connors and his wife, Liz - the exciting
development of the Heart Project prepares us for the expansion
and renewal of our School buildings as we approach the 400th
Anniversary of our School in 2014. Close co-operation of the
School and OMC which I know is central to the Headmaster's
approach
ii) Second Master Simon Dorman and his wife Miranda. Simon
succeeded Mike Orton this year. Mike is here with Sandy and I
know Mike was at St Lawrence Jewry-Next-Guildhall last Monday at
the Haberdashers' service, where he met Gerald Wright.
iii) David Chowns - Bursar who joined this year. A very busy
programme this year as David succeeds Nigel James
iv) Royce Bowen OM 32-40 with granddaughter and guest travelled
from South Africa to be with us today!
v) A Lady who has been at the very heart of the School, this
time for 40 years of dedicated service, is the legendary
cleaning lady of New House - Mrs Ivy Wellington, who is retiring
at the end of the Summer term. As a token of our appreciation
for her long service to all OMs from New House we present Ivy
with this inscribed crystal bowl from the OMC. Thank you Ivy!
Thank you too to Jamie Burn and Simon Dorman for all their hard
work in organising this OM Day.
We can take comfort that the health of the School is in good
hands, some examples of OM contributions include:
- Andrew Bowen (OM83-90), an ultra marathon runner, plans to run
across the Nullarbor Plain, equivalent to 33 marathons, in
August and complete a round of golf to raise money for Autism
Spectrum Australia and The Splash of Red Foundation, which
raises money for SIDS awareness and research.
- Lt Col Simon Butt (OM81-80) has completed the Absolute
Challenge 4th May - 14th May 2011. Riding from Land's End to
John O'Groats, 940 miles in 11 days, raising funds for the Royal
British Legion Battleback Centre, a facility that will radically
improve rehabilitation services for injured Service personnel
through sport and adventure training
- Grant Nicholas (OM79-84) is the song writer and lead
singer of "FEEDER", one of the UK's top rock bands formed in
Newport Wales in 1991. He has very close connections with Japan
- his wife is Japanese as is Taka Hiros the group's bassist.
They have released a single "Side by Side" all the profits
from which will
go towards supporting the Red Cross in beleaguered northern
Japan
- Richard Parks (OM88-95)
the former Welsh International
and Barbarian flanker has just completed his "737 Challenge" a
pioneering 7 month race to climb the highest 7 peaks on each of
the three poles to raise funds in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care
- Other OMs will assist in Sri Lanka and Patagonia in a
practical way to help those suffering from disability, illness
or poverty.
So we steer to fulfil the three objectives of the Club
i) To provide Social and Sporting activities
ii) To provide a link between Monmouth School and Old Boys
iii) To further the interest of the School
In this our 125th year, as we have come together today, in the
words of Leonard Clarke OM
"Let us remember the School by the river
The games that we played in the sun and the rain
The friends that we made who are with us forever
Though some may not answer the roll call again"
John Pearman, President OMC
