Marches Sevens

MONMOUTH SCHOOL'S U18 and U16 Sevens can be very proud of their achievements this week at the National Schools’ Sevens, the world’s largest rugby tournament, with some 7000 boys and girls competing annually.

The U18 Sevens, despite only having a squad of 10, two of which were injured during the tournament, showed tremendous skill and spirit, beating King’s Bruton, Sir William Borlase, Caterham, Bedford Modern, Clifton College and Denstone College.  The squad reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Tonbridge, who went on to win the tournament.  After winning the West of England Sevens earlier on this month, the U18 Sevens are now ranked 6th in the country.

The U16 Sevens stormed through the play-offs to reach the quarter finals, fighting off tough competition from RGS High Wycombe, Forest (London), King’s Worcester, Sherborne and Whitgift.  The team narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals after putting up a valiant fight against St. Joseph’s College, Ipswich.

Dr Steven Connors, Headmaster at Monmouth School said, “We are delighted with both the U16 and U18 Sevens’ results.  The dedication and determination of the players and staff has been tremendous.  This tournament, along with the results of all our teams this term, has proved that Monmouth School can more than hold its own against the big boys of school rugby, and we are very proud to fly the flag for Welsh rugby”.

Hallam Amos - Monmouth School full back - has a debut to savour as he becomes one of the youngest Welsh regional rugby players

MONMOUTH School’s Hallam Amos became one of the youngest Welsh players to play regional rugby when he played for Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday 22nd October 2011vs.Wasps at the age of 17 years and 28 days. Some older fans might draw comparisons between Amos and another former Monmouth School and Newport star Keith Jarrett (OM59-66) who, at full back and centre, exploded onto the scene as a teenager in the late 1960s. Amos marked this record with an excellent try-scoring performance that fully repaid the faith the Dragons management have shown in him as he ran well and was solid in defense. Stockport-born with English parents, the Wales Under-16s international is dual qualified and mentored at Monmouth School by Lions and 1971 Wales Grand Slam winning wing John Bevan, who coaches as a teacher at Monmouth School. Dragons director of rugby Robert Beale said Amos is a player to look out for...a young, talented player..."

Cronk Cunis 2011, London

Forget a Marathon, Ironman Triathlon or swimming the channel. The best way to ensure you can’t walk for a week is to enter the Cronk-Cunis U21 Festival with only 15 players!!!

It is most certainly the best way to demonstrate the grit, determination, raw strength and talent of Old Monmouthians RFC.

Even more than that it is the perfect way to have an amazing laugh with old friends (and make new ones), both on and off the pitch, and re-ignite those old rivalries
Cronk Cunis two

We arrived at the well organised event to find every team professionally fitted out, with squads of a minimum of 20, but on the pitch we dominated. First we played King Edwards, Oxford, easy winners 22-0. As is Monmouth’s tradition with the luck of the Gods in tournaments, our next game was Millfield – or as the vibrant umbrella above their buffet tent said – ‘Millfield Legends’. As always it was a fiery game and this would not fail to entertain. They knew what a game they were in for straight away, the 400 strong crowd grasped and applauded as the OM back row (Wheeler, Lee & Sawyer) dominated proceedings - the sound of the hits were radiating around the tournament. Had it not been possibly the worst refereed game of the tournament the game would have ended 0-0, (resulting in extra-time) as it was, 8-0 was the final result – as you can guess the referee was rapidly invited to test the culinary skills of the Millfield supporters under their umbrella!
Now in the shield competition we faced Oratory, Reading – within 12mins we were 4 tries up and cruising.....this is when the realisation of playing 90mins of high class rugby with no substitutes was definitely hitting home. But in true Monmouth style we never gave up, fighting tooth and nail to finish the game winners, 24-10. Old Monmothians aren’t your usual old boys, despite the fact most players had injuries – including 2 broken fingers, a detached bi-cep, and a suspected metatarsal break – we refused to pull out of the tournament and faced Dulwich College in the semi-final of the Shield. Again we fought with all we had, continuing our pack dominance combined with some excellent pieces of flare in the backs. However in the end Dulwich had a squad far too large for us to match, OM’s eventually losing 31-12.
With the pain numbed following a few beverages, we then hit London town to enjoy the post-rugby experience to the full!
Elsewhere in the tournament Millfield lost to the eventual winners Peter Symonds College, while Dulwich went on to win the Shield. Everyone had an excellent day, all teams had massive respect for our effort, and many will never forget the time they played us!

A fabulous day, not soon to be forgotten. If you are under 21 by 1st September 2012 and would like to play and ensure we have a full squad when we enter next year please e-mail me, James Baldwin, at j_baldwin@hotmail.co.uk or join us on Facebook ‘Monmouth School - Cronk-Cunis Festival
