Old Monmothian, Angus Whitehead, has achieved a magnificent victory in the second leg of the Round the World Clipper Race, culminating in an impressive arrival in Punta del Este, Uruguay, just last night. Angus, First Mate, and his crew now top the leader board, following a closely contested second-place finish in the initial leg to Spain.

Angus was chosen as one of only 11 professional sailors to circumnavigate the globe in the highly prestigious Clipper 2023-24 Race, a challenging competition that spans an impressive 40,000 nautical miles. This remarkable race, which commenced in Portsmouth on September 3rd, is renowned as one of the world’s most formidable endurance challenges.
The Clipper Race involves a gruelling journey around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht, making it a test of endurance and skill unlike any other. Angus and his team came in first place with a finish time of 26 days, 9 hours, 43 minutes and 40 seconds.
A keen rower at school, Angus first started sailing at the age of 13 and has achieved more than 12,000 nautical miles.
Over the past year alone, Angus has sailed more than 3,000 miles as a lead skipper of a flotilla in Greece and Croatia. Additionally, he captained the Friendship Rose, a 75-foot traditionally-built Caribbean Schooner, in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Outside of sailing, Angus is a keen pilot, who flies powered and non-powered aircraft. At the age of 16, Angus graduated from the Air Cadet Leadership Course at RAF Cranwell with Merit.
